This THREE DAY course is approved for 20 contact hours of continuing education towards California Advanced Practice in Feeding, Eating, and Swallowing (SWC)

AUDIENCE: This course is appropriate for new graduate clinicians interested in feeding and swallowing as well as seasoned dysphagia clinicians who are looking for a deeper understanding of swallow physiology.

Working towards your SWC? This is the perfect foundational course to start your training. Seasoned dysphagia clinician looking for clarity? Although perfect for beginners, this course will deepen your understanding of the physiological foundations of feeding and take your treatment to a new level. This three-day, 20 hour workshop will provide an in-depth exploration of the biomechanical, neurological, and sensory components of normal and abnormal swallowing. Participants will walk away with increased confidence in their understanding of the neuro-muscular control of swallow physiology, and be able to confidently apply this knowledge to day-to-day practice. Through lecture, modified barium swallow study videos, case studies, and interactive activities, course participants will acquire the knowledge to assertively address the complex occupation of feeding. Day three provides an opportunity for course participants to workshop actual cases, problem solving treatment strategies, and determining when it is appropriate to discharge a patient from therapy.

 

DAYS 1-2: Neurobiology of Swallowing and Dysphagia
DAY 3: Treatment Planning Workshop

If you have already taken the Neurobiology of Swallowing and Dysphagia (14 or 15 hour course), you are welcome to register for "Sunday Only" to participate in the treatment planning workshop (5 hours).

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

At the completion of the course, participants will:

• Recall and describe the anatomical landmarks of the face, head and neck involved in swallow function.

• Demonstrate understanding of swallow physiology across the lifespan.

• Explain dysphagia and swallowing dysfunction from a neuromuscular and sensory perspective.

• Obtain a basic understanding of how to interpret modified barium swallow studies.

• Guide treatment planning through the use of MBSS as a diagnostic tool.

• Determine evidence-based, problem-based treatment strategies for swallowing dysfunction
